Postcards and Suntan Cream - Easter Amazon Kindle Countdown Deal Day 4 - Camping in France with a Little Comedy!

Camping in France is one of my favourite holidays; I also like a little comedy! This story, combining both, features in Postcards and Suntan Cream: my collection of twelve super summer stories, perfect for the beach, a deck chair in the garden, or if we're not so lucky with the Easter weather, by the fireside!

La VallĂ©e d’Amour

‘Peter! There’s a donkey eating my knickers!’
Peter peered out of the tent where he had been trying to catch a quick siesta, to see a soft grey donkey with Kate’s hot pink M&S pants rapidly disappearing into its mouth.
‘I didn’t want to come here. I told you. We’re too old for this.’ Kate stomped towards him, her face as red as the scarlet canvas that Vacances en France used for its holiday-homes-away-from-home.

Postcards and Suntan Cream - Easter Amazon Kindle Countdown Deal Day 3 - Cruising

Cruising is becoming more popular every year and, because I love it so much, it features in two stories from Postcards and Suntan Cream: my collection of twelve super summer stories, perfect for the beach, a deck chair in the garden, or if we're not so lucky with the Easter weather, by the fireside!

The Woman With The Long Hair

The sun sparkled through her wet hair as Paula rinsed it under the shower by the Castaway deck pool, and swung it up and over her shoulders like an arc of diamonds. She plaited it into a thick dark rope, which reached down past the top of her turquoise bikini bottoms and swished from side to side as she picked her way between the sunbathing passengers back to Karen.
‘I want to ask your advice,’ she said, as she stretched out on her sunbed and closed her eyes.

Postcards and Suntan Cream - Easter Amazon Kindle Countdown Deal Day 2 - The Amalfi Coast

This is Positano on the Italian Amalfi coast which features in two stories from
Postcards and Suntan Cream, my collection of twelve super summer stories, perfect for the beach, a deck chair in the garden, or if we're not so lucky with the Easter weather, by the fireside!

                   Sea Change

We didn’t need to draw the curtains up here on the steep Positano cliffs. Only the gulls wheeled past our window and dipped down, calling to each other, as they caught an early breakfast.
I’d been awake since the sun sailed into the sky and hovered over the sparkling Mediterranean with the promise of another bright day. But, would this one be any better?

Easter is here, so give yourself a treat with this Limited Edition Postcards and Suntan Cream in my Amazon Kindle Countdown Deal!
The deal means that you can download this edition with its specially designed Sixties cover by Samantha Groom for only 99p from today, until 8am BST on Tuesday, April 7th 2015.

Postcards and Suntan Cream is a collection of twelve super summer stories, perfect for the beach, a deck chair in the garden, or if we're not so lucky with the Easter weather, by the fireside!

The first story is one of two set in the 1960s and gives its title to the book:

Postcards and Suntan Cream

I did so wish that Ted had come on holiday with me . . .
Ellie fingers a dog-eared postcard and holds it to her heart, remembering that hot August when anything seemed possible. She closes her eyes, and the picture’s so real that she can almost smell the suntan cream.

If you would like to find out what happened that hot August so long ago, don't forget that that this Kindle Countdown Deal ends on April 7th.

If you want to contact Samantha about a cover for your self-published book, you can at magicat45degrees@gmail.com

How Paul McCartney, CS Lewis, and Reading on the Toilet got me into Writers' Forum this month!

It's been a good writing week for me in Writers' Forum: I've been mentioned three times!
Recently, Paula Williams was asking for writers to tell her about how their day job had inspired a story or a novel for her 'Ideas Store' column.
I wrote in and told her how working at a hotel where The Beatles had stayed in 1963 had prompted me to write about fourteen-year-old Molly who wanted to tell Paul McCartney that she loved him. (You can find out what happened in my collection of summer short stories, Postcards and Suntan Cream!)
I was really pleased to see that Paula had included my story. It was quite funny because a few years ago, I heard about her column and how it could inspire you to write and so I became a subscriber to the magazine. Now here I am in it myself!
There has also been a series by Douglas McPherson, helping you to break into non-fiction article writing. I never thought that I could do it. However, one day I watched The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on TV, and remembered that CS Lewis had died 50 years ago, in November 1963, so began to write an article for practice. I saw that a free magazine had a few articles each month of local interest, and so, because Lewis lived in Oxford for many years, I pitched it to the editor. I was thrilled to be asked to write 500 words and afterwards told it would be in the November issue. On the back of this, I decided to write a letter to the 'Writers'Circle' letters page about it, and they printed it as well!
Lastly, I saw an article in the Metro newspaper reporting on a survey that said that one in 10 men and one in 30 women read their books on the toilet. It also went on to talk about the British people's lack of knowledge of Shakespeare and Dickens. I wrote it up for the 'Newsfront' digest and got it published too with my own byline!
I just shows what you can do, if you look for opportunities and act on them!

How I Made My Video For Gipsy Moth

I enjoyed making the video for Postcards and Suntan Cream with Animoto so much that I thought I'd try one for my novel, Gipsy Moth.
It was really easy. Firstly, there are various styles to choose from to give the general feel of the video. I chose Antique Bouquet because I felt that the colours blended in with those on the cover.
Then I chose the music. It's an instrumental by Dorine Levy called Fly With Me. Apart from fitting in with the theme of flying, it also has a dreamy quality and is an instrumental rather than an electronic piece more suited for today.
The pictures are from the cover and a trip I made to Teignmouth one cloudy day in February, and again are very atmospheric.
All this suggests the emotion that Kathy goes through when she is sent away to Devon because she's  pregnant. And of course if you want to find out if her dreams come true, you'll have to read it!

Introducing my Postcards and Suntan Cream Video!

After seeing Jane Jackson's video for her book Dangerous Waters (which you can see here) I decided to make my own to promote Postcards and Suntan Cream, my book of summer short stories.
It was easy and free to make a standard 30 second video with the help of Animoto, and I spent a happy afternoon fiddling with  it, though I could have done it a bit faster I suppose!
If you want to see it, just click here.
Enjoy!

Eat, Read and Buy Books at the Bookstop Cafe, Lincoln!

It's marvellous what you can find online! Through the RNA, I found a link to Nicky Wells' blog about the Bookstop Cafe in Lincoln. Here are Joff Gainey and Becky Lindley, the owners, at the Grand Opening.
They've had a fabulous idea to open a bookshop and a cafe with a difference: whilst you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a delicious piece of cake, you can sample the books from local and indie authors, and if you like one you can buy a copy to take home.
This is great for the shopper, or visitor to the historical city of Lincoln, to rest their feet and try out some new fiction, but it also gives a very important opportunity to those local and indie authors to make their books accessible to the reading public. It's a win:win situation!

If you'd like to visit the bookshop, you can find it at:
47b Steep Hill, Lincoln

If you want to find out more about placing your book in his exciting venue, you can tweet Joff at @BookStopCafe

Here's my book of summery short stories, Postcards and Suntan Cream, sitting proudly in the centre at the top. I hope you'll go in, treat yourself to a coffee, and read it!
If you have young adults in your family, they might enjoy Joff's own self-published fantasy novel, Sleeping on a Cloud, which you can see at the bottom right.
Happy reading!

A Postcard from New Zealand featuring After the Fall by Charity Norman

Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand and can be translated as the Land of the Long White Cloud. We visited most of it from Milford Sound in the south to Auckland in the north. However, one place I wished we had seen was Napier, in Hawke's Bay on North Island, where After the Fall is set.
This novel by Charity Norman gripped me from the beginning when one of Martha McNamara's twin sons has fallen from the balcony of their new home in New Zealand, and we don't know if he  is alive or dead.
We see the story through Martha's eyes, but she's not letting on how or why he fell. She says he was sleepwalking, but was he? The story is told in a series of flashbacks, interspersed with Martha waiting by her son, Finn's, bed in hospital, and being questioned by Social Services.
Her husband, Kit, an Irish artist, wanted a new start in New Zealand because his advertising business failed in the UK, so Martha has given up everything to bring Sacha, her teenage daughter, and her twins with Kit, Finn and Charlie, to live in a remote farmhouse above Napier.
At first, all is ok, but then why do things keep disappearing? Is it the Patupaiarehe spirits that the Maori people believe live in the woods? And what is Sacha getting up to with her new friends? Also, who is her father? Another clever aspect of the book is that Charity Norman has Martha's mother, long passed away, whispering in her ear as her conscience. Rather like an 'I told you so!' Jiminy Cricket. I just had to keep reading!
Have you read After the Fall? What did you think of it?

To celebrate the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, whether it rains or shines, I'm offering a FREE DOWNLOAD of my book of Twelve Super Summer Stories,  Postcards and Suntan Cream from 8am Friday, 3rd May 2013 to 8am Tuesday 7th May 2013, British Summer Time. Just click on the book cover at the top of the page!

Holiday Blog Party Friday - Key West, Florida

Hello again! I've just jetted over to Key West, Florida. I'm here at Ernest Hemingway's house to celebrate the online launch of my new book of short stories, Postcards and Suntan Cream with a Holiday Blog Party, showcasing the holiday destinations that I've used as a background to my stories.
Visitors come Key West to see the sun set from Mallory Dock, and to visit Sloppy Joe's Bar and the other favourite haunts of Ernest Hemingway, such as Dry Tortugas where he would fish for giant tuna and marlin.
My story here is The Importance of Being Ernest which I hope you'll enjoy reading as much as I did writing it!

Holiday Blog Party: Thursday - Capri

I've just got the ferry from Positano to Capri. Gracie Fields used to live here and Mariah Carey has a villa on the island now. It's also famous for the visits of Jackie Kennedy Onassis who is said to have begun to wear large sunglasses here to avoid the paparazzi. I definitely look very Jackie O in mine!!!
If you've been following my blog this week, you'll know that I'm hosting a Holiday Blog Party to celebrate the launch of my book of short stories, Postcards and Suntan Cream.

Here is the beautiful majolica tiled floor of St Michael's Church in Anacapri, the higher town, which features in A Ring Around Capri. It's lovely to get out of the heat and wander around the wooden walkway to admire the intricate illustration of the story of Adam and Eve.

Each day I've been blogging about one of my favourite holiday destinations which form a backdrop to my stories.

Holiday Blog Party: Wednesday - Positano

Ciao! The sun's shining brightly in Italy today. I'm here on my tour of the places that inspired me to write the summery stories in my new book, Postcards and Suntan Cream, so come and join in my Holiday Blog Party!
This story, Sea Change, arrived fully formed one morning as I had dreamed the whole thing. Very unusual for me. However, I needed a location, and having a beach and a ferry port, Positano fitted the bill perfectly.
The coast road to Amalfi winds down to the seafront, and up again through the town. It's virtually impossible to get a parking space, so I made Anna and Will live in one of the houses on the steep cliffs, and walk to the beach.

Each day I'm blogging about one of my favourite holiday destinations which form a backdrop to my stories.

Holiday Blog Party: Tuesday - Camping in France

Cheers! I've crossed the Channel today to one of my favourite campsites in France, and the weather's looking much better! Do help yourself to some of this delicious Côtes du Rhône from the Intermarché.
If you've been following my trip this week, you'll know that I'm visiting the holiday destinations that inspired the stories in my new book, Postcards and Suntan Cream.

I've been camping in France, not to mention Italy, Germany and The Netherlands, for many years with Eurocamp. Back in 1990, I remember helping to unpack the first fridges for the tents! Before that there was only a large cool box with an ice pack that you exchanged each day at the campsite shop. How things have changed since then, now most accommodation is in mobile homes which may even have air conditioning!
My story, La Vallée d'Amour is set in Alsace. It's not so hot and crowded as the South of France in summer, but that's where Kate really wanted to go. . .

Each day I am blogging about one of my favourite holiday destinations which form a backdrop to my stories.

Holiday Blog Party: Monday- The British Seaside

Welcome to my Holiday Blog Party for the online launch of Postcards and Suntan Cream!
Today we're at the British seaside, Weston-super- Mare to be exact, famous for its low tides and wide expanses of sand and mud!
As you can see the sun is at least shining, although it's a bit windy. Never mind, let's go and have a coffee.
Two of my stories are set at the seaside: Love Me Do and the title story: Postcards and Suntan Cream. Funnily enough, they are both set in the Sixties, the heyday of the British seaside holiday.
These days, Weston is on the up with its brand new Grand Pier, which even has a covered walkway so you don't get wet on the way to the amusements!
Find out if Molly wrote this in the sand!
